Throughout the high summer, the sun can be seen 24 hours per day in northern Finland. In Utsjoki in the northernmost part of Lapland, the longest summer’s day lasts more than two months! Even in the south of Finland, the summer evenings retain a degree of light, with the long twilight followed by an early dawn.
Land of lakes and endless horizons
Finland boasts more than 180.000 lakes, 35 national parks and many thousand kilometres of coastline. And thanks to the official ”right to roam”, everyone has free access to the nation’s vast wide-open spaces. This means you will have excellent opportunities to explore both the countryside and the coastline.
Nordic walking – a popular Finnish pastime
Peaceful countryside and active recreation are the perfect combination for an enjoyable holiday, and Nordic walking is an excellent method of enjoying both of these pleasures to the full. This is a sport can easily be mastered whatever the season or location, using your holiday home as a base.
Back in the 1950’s, top cross country skiers and biathletes began to take up Nordic walking as an important part of their summer training. The athletes did not want to lose the feeling of holding ski poles in the summer, and found this new sport to be a great method of keeping the body in constant, gentle motion and bringing 90 % of the body’s muscles into action. By the 1990’s, Nordic walking had become became a popular grassroots activity, and it is still widely practiced all across the country. Finland possesses optimal conditions to participate in the sport, which can be practiced almost anywhere in the great outdoors. There are even dedicated Nordic walking parks and trails of varied lengths and degrees of difficulty - meaning all levels and abilities can be catered for.
